I loved Snow Falling on Cedars so picked up this wonderful paperback.  It's very different and very, very good.  This is a story of two friends who meet running a race in high school and become the sort of friends most of us dream of.  They're both somewhat 'outsiders' and extremely cerebral, well-read, good at chess, and totally into the wilderness...  If fact, WAY into the wilderness to the point where they take real chances in it.   However, both eventually meet women and at that point go in totally different directions..  I loved the writing, and characters...  It really brought back my college experiences in some ways... I knew some of these guys.
