Blindspot by Jane Kamensky and Jill Lapore

This book is a terrific romp written as a dual narrative by a 'Lady in Disguise and a Gentleman in Exile'. Scottish portrait painter Stewart Jamieson is on the lamb from his debtors and following an arduous journey finds himself in pre-revolutionary Boston where he immediately sets up a studio and is in need of an assistant.  Fanny Easton, a desperate fallen woman with artistic ambitions of her own applies-disguised as a young boy Francis Weston.  Colonial politics, a murder, false accusations, denied justice, the dignity of man, the horrors of slavery, family tragedy, art, secret societies all converge as our 2 narrators experience a meeting of minds, artistic skill and forbidden yearnings!
