The Past is Always Greener...
I finally saw Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris - what a sweet and charming treat! It did remind me of the dangers of nostalgia... romanticising the past too much can sometimes cloud your ability to enjoy the present and see the value of what is right in front of you. I am trying my very best to look forward right now, but I can't deny that I'm missing my Village Books!
Speaking of looking foward, I want to remind you again about ordering books from our website, palivillagebooks.com. If we can generate decent sales on the website, it will allow some form of Village Books to go forward and produce author and other literary events at venues in the village; supply books for our schools; participate in offsites such as holiday boutiques and bookfairs; and otherwise continue to be part of our Pacific Palisades community. I truly appreciate each of you who has made the extra effort to register and order books off our site. Plus I know a lot of you are "booked out" from buying so many books from VB in its last weeks of operation. As we head into August, I will have to make hard decisions about what is really feasible to do, and sales on our website will be crucial in making those decisions. (For example, yesterday's daily report showed we sold 8 books on our site, and when I checked the details, it turned out I bought 5 of them and Connie bought the other three! Probably not a great basis for going forward...!).
So please consider making palivillagebooks.com your on-line bookseller of choice. Register once and you are ready to order as often as you like - 20% off hardcovers, 10% off paperbacks and free shipping to your door!! Thanks and please ask your friends and family (no matter where they live) to do the same. Now that I am almost finished clearing out of the store, I will be focusing my attention on adding some features to our website, including a weekly feature "This is what I would have ordered this week for the Front Table... now you can order it too from our website!" Stay tuned!!

Don't forget, you can order them right here from Village Books by clicking on the banner above, and you'll save 20% off hardbacks, 10% off paperbacks AND get free shipping, right to your door...or right to the door of wherever you are this summer! So relax and enjoy. Summer is a great time to get lost in a book!

Then We Came to the End
It was with great regret and sadness that Katie O'Laughlin announced on Thursday, June 2 that Village Books would be closing on June 30, after fourteen years in business. "Village Books has struggled financially for the past 10 years," says O'Laughlin, "but I was able to somehow make it work. Unfortunately, recent changes in the book business have made it impossible to continue operating the store in its present form." To read the full story, click here.
What you can do to help:
Come into the store this month and buy a book or books, so Katie can wind down the business "and stay out of debtor's prison!!"
