The other side of midnight...
I finally got my copy on a Saturday morning and never looked up once I opened the book. I sobbed at the end, and didn't realize until later that I had overlooked the epilogue. Without giving anything away, I wouldn't have cried quite so hard if I had further information about Catherine's fate. Sheldon was a master storyteller. He was a successful writer and producer for stage, screen and television and didn't start writing novels until he was age 50 (I love stories like that!).
Remembering my response to Other Side got me thinking about certain books that bubble up from the pack and get passed around from friend to friend and on to your co-workers, family and anyone who wants to hear you sing its praises. I remember being introduced to Pat Conroy's Prince of Tides more than 17 years ago at my dentist's office. The hygenist took my hand and looked me in the eye and asked if I had read it. I hadn't, but her passion about it prompted me to buy it and then pass it on in much the same way.
Other books that seem to have touched people in the same way include The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood , by Rebecca Wells; The Secret Life of Bees , by Sue Monk Kidd; Peace Like a River , by Leif Enger; The Kite Runner , by Khaled Hosseini and more recently, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan , by Lisa See and Memory Keepers Daughter , by Kim Edwards.
