Guilty Pleasures
I read a short story by Primo Levy in the January 8, 2007 issue. The story, entitled “Bear Meat”, is short and stunning and reminded me of the power of a good short story. It always amazes me how an author can create characters and a sense of place in so few words.
Favorite collections of mine include Interpreter of Maladies by Jhumpa Lahiri, The Coast of Good Intentions , by Michael Byers and my extra favorite, Island , by Alistair MacLeod. Houghton Mifflin also publishes the annual “Best American Short Stories” which collects the best short stories published that year. The 2006 edition is edited by Ann Patchett and contains many gems. Well, its 10am and I’d better open up the door….. Katie
