Gabrielle Burton reads & signs Impatient With Desire
Friday, March 19 2010, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
impatientwdesireGabrielle Burton reads & signs Impatient With Desire. In the summer of 1846, Tamsen Donner, her husband, George, their five daughters, and eighty other pioneers embarked on the California-Oregon Trail.  During that ill-fated trip, early snows trapped them for over four months in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.  Almost half the group died, and some resorted to unimaginable means to survive—making the Donner Party an enduringly fascinating episode in American history. Set during those long snowbound months and told through the hauntingly imagined journal and letters of Tamsen Donner, IMPATIENT WITH DESIRE (Voice; March 9, 2010) is a psychologically penetrating, dramatic, provocative and intimate novel of the Donner Party.  Burton weaves a remarkable tale based on factual occurrences of courageous pioneers forging westward expansion under heartbreaking circumstances.
Gabrielle Burton’s previous novel, Heartbreak Hotel, was awarded the Maxwell Perkins Prize and the Great Lakes Colleges Association’s New Writers Award.  It was reprinted by the prestigious Dalkey Archive Press.  She has been a Yaddo fellow, a MacDowell Colony fellow, and the Bernard De Voto Fellow in Non-fiction at the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference.  Burton lives in Venice, California.
